Christmas Potluck Dinner


The Council’s Christmas Potluck will be on Thursday, December 13. All Brother Knights and their families are invited. The hall and bar will open at 5:30pm, and dinner will be served at 6:30pm. Also, we would ask that you bring an unused baby item for a donation to the Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home. Some suggestions are:

• Diapers
• Wipes
• Formula
• Bottles & Nipples
• Baby Toys
• Onesies
• Receiving Blankets
• Baby Washcloths
• Baby Soaps

Council, Membership

Membership Drive & 1st Degree

On Thursday, Nov.15th, we will be holding a 1st degree ceremony at the hall.  The doors will open at 6:00PM and the ceremony will commence at 7:00PM with refreshments to follow.  All members of Council 953 are welcome to attend as observers and to greet our new Knights.

If any member has someone in mind that he feels would be a good addition to the Knights, now is the time to ask them.  If any such person expresses an interest, I will be happy to meet with them and to fill out an application form if that person decides to join.

Finally, we are also holding a membership drive at St. Mary’s church this Saturday and Sunday following each mass.  I could use someone after the 8:00AM and 11:00AM masses to hand out our brochure to any interested person at the garden side door of the church.  Time spent would be about 10 minutes.  Please let me know if you could help out.

Annual Memorial Mass

Council 953’s annual Memorial Mass will be held on Sunday, November 4 at St. George Melkite‐Greek Catholic Parish, 1620 Bell Street. The Divine Liturgy (Mass) will begin at 10:30 am, followed immediately by the traditional Byzantine Catholic memorial service in honor of our Brother Knights who fell asleep in the Lord during this past year: Carmine Paglucia, Stan Devereux, and Charlie Nulk. All Brother Knights and their families are encouraged to attend. Coffee and refreshments will follow in the parish hall.

Mexican Night Coming Up Fast

Are you ready for some delicious carnitas and homemade guacamole? Yes! Then please save the date Saturday, October 20 to attend the 2018 Mexican Night dinner.

Funds raised from this year’s dinner will once again be donated to Clara’s House. Council 953 is grateful for your past support of this mid-town primary health care clinic, its nurse practitioners, and the many volunteers who provide compassionate health services to the voiceless and vulnerable among us. Last year we were able to
donate $2000 dollars thanks to your attendance at the 2017 Mexican Night.

Clara’s House is a nonprofit 501c3 organization funded solely by tax deductible donations and grants. The Knights appreciate how all the funds donated to Clara’s House are used to provide medical services. The volunteer staff is all unpaid allowing them to provide health care at no charge to their patients and provide basic lab tests for patients at no charge.

We Stand on Ethical Ground

Some people believe that ethics in business is a contradiction in terms. They think that in order to be profitable, a company and its leaders must abandon morality and embrace the dark, greedy side of capitalism.

At the Knights of Columbus, we know this business model is incorrect. As a Catholic organization, we understand the value and importance of our core beliefs and the original mission of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney. In fact, much of the strength and financial security we provide to members and their families can
be attributed to our ethical, moral standards.

More than 96 percent of Knights who buy our life insurance keep it, year in and year out. The Order takes this commitment to our members very highly. This means carefully planning when it comes time to invest. Our professional staff researches all transactions to insure that they fall in line with Catholic values. If a transaction
makes them uncomfortable, they don’t make it.

“We exclude any company engaged in activity that conflicts with Catholic moral teaching: companies directly involved in abortion, contraception, human cloning, embryonic stem cell research, for-profit health care that pays for any of these, or pornography,” said the Supreme Knight. “There are many companies in the pharmaceutical and communications industries that would undoubtedly provide excellent returns for us, but which are not in our portfolio because they engage in research and development or programming in ways that violate the sanctity or dignity of human life.”

In the end, the Knights of Columbus investment strategy is motivated by morality and not money-making. Yet, each year we remain profitable, increase our assets and stay dedicated to this vision that will keep the Order sound financially for generations to come.

“Faithful Catholics have choices when buying life insurance,” said the Supreme Knight. “But they know that at the Knights of Columbus their policy is supplied by an insurer that shares their moral and ethical values and is guided in all of its investment and sales practices by those values.”

Grand Knight’s Message, October 2018

Dear Brother Knights:

We have many big projects as a council this year and I am proud to say that we are on the right track to accomplishing them. We have fulfilled two committees that are of paramount importance to our order. Education and Pro life. Education is a new endeavor however we are very optimistic that we will achieve a lot in this committee. In the modern would pro life ideas have been on constant assault and Council 953 will stay apprised of what is going on. Please attend council meetings to get the latest information.

The council has established chair people for each parish it serves. These people will act as a resource towards brother knights within its council. This will aid in keeping brother knights active and participating.

We have many upcoming events that we encourage you and your families to attend. The Oktoberfest and Mexican Night are right around the corner. Please reserve your spots.

I would like to express a great gratitude towards all of my fellow brother knights who have taken positions with this historic cancel and to all of those who volunteer. Thank you to all of the cooks and bar tenders for the delicious food and beverages. Thank you very much for giving me the honor of being your grand knight and I will do my best to serve all of you Catholic gentlemen and families.
