Hello, My name is Fred Struck. I live in Sacramento California. I am a member of St. George Melkite-Greek Catholic Church where I am know as Reader Fred. I have been the Reader at St. George's since 1988. I am also a Past Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus Sacramento Council 953.

Culture of Life Report for March 2014

Brother Knights,
Spring, the season that represents life is upon us once again. So please take a moment to look around you and you will undoubtedly see your Mothers your Fathers, your Brothers and your Sisters. Their lives have bloomed because their Mother did not choose to cut their life short. Each of us should take some time and devote our efforts to saving a life.
Please use the month of March to stand up for life. Take a few minutes to call a friend and pass the word about springtime and the sanctity of life.
I am asking that each of my Brother Knights join with me in prayer on March 7, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. during the Sacramento 40 Days for Life at 1442 Ethan Way and Hallmark Drive. Let us spend one hour in prayer together. Praying outside an abortion facility is one of the most important pro-life activities we can do.
40 Days for Life continues the prayerful tradition started in 2007, mobilizing people of faith and conscience now in hundreds of cities across the United States, Canada and the world. On March 5, the prayer campaign will begin in Sacramento and cities everywhere. I sincerely thank you for standing with us for these babies who are created in God’s image and worthy of our time!
The Knights of Columbus will unite with others across America and around the world for a massive, coordinated, pro-life mobilization. This campaign is an effort to bring together people of all faiths to pray for an end to the loss of pre-born human life and for the healing of those affected by abortion. We are praying that, with God’s help, this groundbreaking effort will mark the beginning of the end of abortion in Sacramento — and throughout the world.
While all aspects of 40 Days for Life are crucial in our effort to end abortion, the most visible component is the peaceful prayer vigil outside the abortion facility on Ethan Way. The vigil is peaceful. Participants agree to a Code of Conduct with a pledge that they will conduct themselves in a Christ-like manner. You can help make a life-saving impact by signing up for at least one one-hour block of time. Everyone is welcome!
If you are unable to attend, please take some time to write to your Congressional elected representatives. I urge you to support legislation to take us one small step toward a society that promotes life and not death for unborn children and their mothers. The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act (H.R. 7) deserves your support, so please write your letter today.

Grand Knight’s Message, February 2014

To my brother knights & their families,

Our Crab Feed was held on Saturday January 18th. This is one of our big fund raisers. Many thanks to all who helped prepare the food, serve the food, sold raffle tickets and helped cleaned. Also thanks to all who brought friends and family to the dinner and purchased raffle tickets. A special thank you to Al Piccardo who not only chaired the dinner but also brought many people to the dinner and solicited many of the raffle prizes. This was the second major fund raiser that Al has chaired in two months.

Ladies Night on February 20th is a great opportunity for us to treat the special women in our lives to a very special fun filled evening. In case anyone forgets Valentine’s Day, here is your chance for redemption.  Please contact PGK Matt Lucien at (916)382-9727 for reservations or  leave a message on the hall phone at 916-736-0953.

This year’s Pasta Dinner will be held on Thursday February 27. This is a fund-raiser to benefit the Sacramento Life Center and the Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home.  For reservations or to volunteer to help out please call: PGK Ricardo Saldaña (916) 712‐7355 or leave a message on the hall phone at 916-736-0953.

Please consider wearing your Knights of Columbus name badge when you are at church, especially when you are volunteering your time. This also includes when you are helping out at the school if your parish has one.  This is a great opportunity for the members of your church to see the Knights of Columbus in action. Perhaps you might pique the interest of a potential candidate for our order.

Thank you.

Results of This Year’s Basketball Free Throw Championships

There were a total of 186 kids, both boys and girls age 9 through 14, who participated this year at St. Mary and Sacred Heart Schools. Out of those 186, we have 12 council best shooters, 6 boys and 6 girls. The split between the two schools is quite even this year with 6 winners at each school making up our council champions. Each of these 12 students are going on to the District Free Throw Championship, which will be held on Saturday, February 8th at the St. Philomene School gym.
My thanks go out to our council helpers this year, some of whom are regulars: George Mills, Alex Kachmar, Dick Cutting, Frank Philips, and Ricardo Saldaña.

Spouses can be Important to the Charitable Works of the Order

As a member of this council, you know how important spouses can be to the charitable works of the Order. If you’re married, your wife is probably involved in a few of the many events that happen each fraternal year. This support adds great value and impact to what a council can
achieve.

When the Order was founded in 1882, Father Michael J. McGivney and the other brave men were setting out to protect Catholic families, but especially wives and children. We know today this is done through our insurance products which are designed with that goal in mind. One specific policy rider that you may not know about is called Spousal Waiver of Premium. This rider is unique to the Knights of Columbus
philosophy of helping our widows.

This rider is available on most permanent and Discoverer plans purchased at standard rates by a member and his wife on the same day. When both spouses apply, the rider provides for waiver of premiums on the spouse’s contract in the event of the insured’s death. Best of all, for members and spouses ages 18 to 60, this waiver can be added for no charge. The rider stays in effect until the spouse attains age 65 or certain other triggering events occur.

Our products are designed with your needs and budget in mind. With a solid portfolio of life insurance, long-term care, disability income and retirement products, the Knights of Columbus can help you meet all of your financial goals. To learn more about these solutions, contact me today.

Culture of Life Report for February 2014

Brother Knights,

Together we can celebrate God’s wonderful gift of human life and as a group we should ask our government to respect and protect life from its very beginning. We need to work on this.
I urge you to support legislation to take us one small step toward a society that promotes life and not death for unborn children and their mothers. The No  Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act (H.R. 7) is sponsored by Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Dan Lipinski (D-IL) and 163 other members. It deserves your support.

H.R. 7  will write into permanent law a policy on which there has been strong popular and congressional agreement for over 37 years: The federal government should not use its funding power to support and promote elective abortion, and should not force taxpayers to subsidize this violence. Even public officials who take a “pro-choice” stand, and courts that have insisted on a constitutional “right” to abortion, have agreed that the government has every right to “encourage childbirth over abortion.”

Please contact your Congressional Representative  and urge him/her to vote for H.R. 7 when it comes before the full House of Representatives.
Please Pray !

Please come pray for LIFE on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday morning this week, 9:00 am to 11:00 am, which is when abortions are done at 1442 Ethan Way.

The Last Word

There are many ways you can be a “citizen lobbyist” on behalf of the sanctity of life at the local, state, and federal levels. I will be providing more information on this topic in the coming months.

Grand Knight’s Message, January 2014

To My Brother Knights and Their Families:

I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Everyone had a great time at the Christmas potluck. Thanks to all who donated items for the mothers in need and thanks also to Bill Renard for taking those items to the Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home. Thanks also to all who cooked, especially Dave Carboni and Steve Mills for cooking the ham. Also thanks to all who provided items for Santa to give the children, and to Santa himself for taking the time to come during the busy season.

As we begin the new year we look forward to many events. On January 11, 2014 we have a Second and Third Degree Exemplification at St. Paul Parish Hall, 8720 Florin Road, Sacramento CA 95828. If you haven’t taken your second and third degree yet, please consider taking them on the 11th. Please contact me or our Membership director Kevin Simpson if you plan on going.

Our Crab Feed is on Saturday January 18th. This is one of our big fund raisers. There are many ways you can help out. Help is needed with donating raffle prizes, setting up, food preparation, serving the food, selling raffle tickets or cleaning up after the event. You can also help by coming to the Dinner and bringing a friend. If you can help please call Al Piccardo at 916-381-4747 or leave a message on the hall phone at 916-736-0953.
