Rally for Religious Freedom / Walk for Religious Freedom / Fortnight for Freedom
Brothers and families, there are (3) upcoming events in which we should participate, if at all possible.

1. On Friday June 8 at noon on the west steps of the State Capitol will be a Rally for Religious Freedom.  I encourage you to go and listen to the speakers.  The local rally is only one of about 140 similar rallies occurring all over the nation.  The more people who attend these rallies, the more likely that local and national media will bring attention to our concerns.  More info on the Rally can be found at http://standupforreligiousfreedom.com/locations/.

2. On Saturday June 8, Bishop Soto will lead a Walk for Religious Freedom following the 5pm vigil mass.  This walk will be a Eucharistic procession from the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe through the streets of Downtown Sacramento.  Bishop Soto is encouraging as many people as possible to participate.  More info on the Walk can be found at www.diocese-sacramento.org.

3. The US Bishops are calling on all American Catholics to observe a Fortnight for Freedom the vigil of the feasts of St. John Fisher & St. Thomas More, to July 4.   Concretely, they are calling for a “special period of prayer, study, catechesis and public action” to emphasize “our Christian and American heritage of liberty.”
To learn more about the efforts to defend religious liberty, go to http://usccb.org/issues-and-action/religious-liberty/ and www.stophhs.com.

Pray for our nation, candidates, officials & judges
It is probably not repeated enough in this election year, but please remember to include in your prayers the good of our nation, the candidates who are seeking office, all current office holders, and all judges.  You can even pray for them by name and there are a few saints whom you might ask to intercede for them including St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More among others.  If we pray for God’s will for our country, our officials, and judges, then we won’t be disappointed.

“To claim the right to abortion, infanticide and euthanasia, and to recognize that right in law, means to attribute to human freedom a perverse and evil significance: that of an absolute power over others and against others. This is the death of true freedom: “Truly, truly, I say to you, every one who commits sin is a slave to sin” (Jn 8:34).” –  Evangelium Vitae, 20 – Blessed John Paul II

Grand Knight’s Message May 2012

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE

To my Worthy Brother Knights and their Families,

I trust we all had a wonderful & blessed Easter. With Pentecost just around the corner, now is the time to renew and strengthen our faith, our lives and our families. Let us welcome the Holy Spirit and celebrate the birthday of the church by being active in both your parish and council. Let the Knights of Columbus be your vehicle to help accomplish this goal. Please approach us with any ideas or thoughts you may have. We are here to serve.

Thank you to all who contributed to our saint’s and sinners golf tournament as well as our annual yard sale. The proceeds raised will go to the many worthy causes our council supports. Just a reminder, we are preparing for our 2nd E-waste drive on June 16th. Terry will be happy to come by and pick up any items  too large to fit in your vehicle. Please visit our council’s website ( www.KofC953.org ) for items that can be collected. Basically, if it plugs in, we’ll take it!

This May’s general meeting will mark the last of our “Free Dinner’s” so please take advantage  and come visit your fellow Knights at the hall. We’d LOVE to see you.

Lastly, We are fast approaching the end of our Columbian year. If you know of any fellow parishioners, catholic co-workers or friends… talk to them about the Knights of Columbus. If you’re uncomfortable with this, let us know, we’d be happy to talk to them for you. Sometimes, all it takes is asking.

Basketball Free-throw Contest Results

Council 953 again this year conducted the basketball free throw contest at three area schools: St. Marys, Sacred Heart and Holy Spirit. The total students that participated was 290 this year. These are boys and girls ages 10-14. It took a few hours at each school to go through all of these students. I really appreciate the Brother Knights that volunteered this year to help run the events, especially since I was hobbled quite a bit by a broken left foot. The helpers were: Dick Cutting, Floyd Wells, Ricardo Saldana, Steve Mills. I feel like I am leaving someone out, so please accept my thanks and apology if I have. We will do it again next year.

Sacramento Life Center Baby Bottle fundraiser
Thanks to all our council brothers who donated to this annual fundraiser at the April business meeting.  Due to your generosity we raised $52.00 that will be donated to the Sacramento Life Center.

40 Days for Life – A few final stats
As reported by the national 40 Days for Life coordinators here are the final (and amazing) stats on the recently concluded Spring campaign:

* 100,000+ participants from 4,000+ churches

* Campaigns were held in 261 cities across the U.S.,   Canada, Australia, England, Ireland, Poland and Spain

* 8 abortion workers quit their jobs

* 883 babies were spared from abortion during this campaign, bringing the cumulative total of lives saved to almost 6,000 since 40 Days for Life began four and a half years ago (5,928 to be precise!)

Religious Liberty / Health Care Mandate
Brothers and families, it is imperative that we continue to communicate to our elected representatives that the HHS mandate is a case of the government overstepping its bounds.  This must be communicated time and again even when we are certain our elected officials disagree with us.  Also, your support of religious freedom in the form of letters to the editors, comments to news articles and internet forums are helpful too.
Don’t give up this fight.  And if you’re still on the sidelines, it is time to get in the game.  Go to http://usccb.org/issues-and-action/religious-liberty/ and www.stophhs.com for info and the latest updates.  But very importantly, we must pray.  Pray for God’s will to be done in this case.  Pray that he send his grace that brings liberty and justice for all.
