Grand Knight’s Message February 2012

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE

Hello my Worthy Brothers and family.

There’s so much to cover in this months GK message. First, let me start out by saying it gives me great excitement to announce that our general meeting dinners in March, April and May will be FREE! If successful, our council may budget for all the monthly dinners in the next Columbian year. Your attendance will show support for this new program.

Our second announcement is that the K of C council 953 will be sponsoring a Loaves and Fishes hot meal once a month. It will most likely be the last Friday of every month from 10 am – 1 pm, volunteers will be on a rotating schedule. All we need is two volunteers at a time. Knights, wives, family & friends are all encouraged to help. We understand that this falls on a workday and we pray that with plenty of notice some can go to work later, get off early, take an extended lunch or if able, perhaps take the day off. It’s only for 3 hours and it helps an organization that helps many in need. Loaves and Fishes is responsible for serving over 700 hot meals a day. That’s over 21,000 hot meals every month, all without government funding. Let’s get together and lend a helping hand to this charitable organization. This is a great opportunity for the K of C to make a public presence. Please contact me so we can start a rotation.

Our 3rd announcement is that our council will have a “Mexican Knight” in May. If you would like to help contribute or have thoughts on making this event a success, please contact Lewis Munoz. All proceeds will benefit the Newman Center student retreat program.

Lastly, I’d like to extend a sincere thank you to our co-Knights of the month: PGK Al Piccardo & Johnny Waldron. The annual Shrimp Feed and Crab Feed performed by these two Knights and their “crew” have been a staple on our council’s calendar as an event not to miss. Their past success- and no doubt, this year’s success- is but one reason to recognize these Brothers in our council………….Thank you!

Please also keep in mind that coming up this month will be:
Ladies Night on 2/16 and our ID Spaghetti Dinner on 2/18.

Have a Blessed Month!

Your Grand Knight Council 953

Beneficiaries…Who Do You Love?

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS INSURANCE “Your Shield For Life”.

Beneficiaries…Who Do You Love?

Valentine’s Day will soon be here! Do you know who the beneficiary is on your life insurance policy? Sometimes it is easy to overlook the simplest of things.

Why is it so important to know and to have your beneficiary information updated? A life insurance policy protects the financial status of another person – or people – in the event of your death.

When Purchasing Knights of Columbus insurance policy, you have selected a primary beneficiary, and if you desire, a contingent, or secondary beneficiary. It’s always a wise choice to have a contingent beneficiary because you may outlive your primary beneficiary. A contingent beneficiary is the person designated to receive life insurance policy proceeds if the primary beneficiary dies.

By being specific as possible in the wording your beneficiary designation you make sure that the life insurance proceeds will be available to your wife, daughter, son, etc., in a timely manner when needed most.

Your life situation will undoubtedly change over time. Plan to update your beneficiary designations periodically. This will ensure that your life insurance coverage will protect those you love and want to protect.

Changing your beneficiary is fairly simple. I can provide you with the necessary forms, and can help you fill them out. I can also help you with all of your life insurance policy beneficiary designations for any life insurance policy you hold – regardless of the company that issued it.

To contact me with regards to any of your insurance needs, please call my office at (916) 691-4571 or e-mail me at hank.cornell@kofc.org

Walk for Life – West Coast – tens of thousands pray & witness for life
It is always inspiring to join 50,000 others who come together to witness for life. Those of us who went to San Francisco found great weather, heard impressive speakers and prayed together with complete strangers for our common cause. BART was an excellent way to get to the Walk as the train was filled both ways with others going to/from the Walk. Mark your calendars for Jan. 26, 2013 and attend the next Walk for Life.

40 Days for Life – Feb. 22 – Apr. 1
Please join us in the Spring 40 Days for Life prayer vigil at the Women’s Health Specialists Center at 1750 Wright St (at Alta Arden).
It is edifying to me as Culture of Life Director to see that many of you Brother Knights participate in each of these vigils. It is not easy, popular or cool to acknowledge publicly that we stand on the side of life. In fact, when many of us do stand up publicly for life, it is typical for us to be vilified by family, friends and strangers alike.
So, I ask you to pray and ask God for guidance on how you can participate in this Spring’s vigil. But most of all, as Christ himself said and Blessed John Paul II echoed, “Do not be afraid!”
Sign-up sheets will be circulated at our Feb. business meeting and through email for you to sign up to pray, fast or give witness. Please put your pro-life beliefs into action.

Parental Notification & Death Penalty Initiatives
Bishop Soto and the other bishops in California are asking all Catholics to support two initiatives that are gathering signatures for the fall ballot. One is for parental notification if a minor girl seeks an abortion. The other would abolish the death penalty in California and replace it with life imprisonment with no possibility of parole. Bishop Soto is asking there to be signature gathering in every parish on the 3rd weekend of February for both initiatives.
For more information, see Bishop Soto’s letter.

Did you know?
In 2008, the late Dr. Bernard Nathanson, a former abortionist and who became pro-life and was baptized a Catholic, was interviewed on a Canadian radio station. In that interview, Dr. Nathanson, who was a major part of the movement for legalizing abortion in America, “recalled the deceitful and dishonest tactics that he and NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League) relied upon to push for the legalization and acceptance of abortion. ‘We claimed that between five and ten thousand women a year died of botched abortions,’ he said. ‘The actual figure was closer to 200 to 300 and we also claimed that there were a million illegal abortions a year in the United States and the actual figure was close to 200,000. So, we were guilty of massive deception.’ “
