Newman Closing

As many are already aware, the Newman Catholic Community at Sacramento State will soon be closing. Although the Newman Center itself will still remain open to serve Catholic students at the university for the foreseeable future, the permanent community will cease to exist. It has been announced that the final mass for the permanent community will take place on Sunday, May 22. All Brother Knights are encouraged to attend this final mass as a showing of support for our Brothers at Newman as they search for new parishes to call home.

Memorial Mass

Council 953’s annual Memorial Mass will be held on Sunday, November 1 at St. George Melkite-Greek Catholic Parish, 1620 Bell Street. The Divine Liturgy (Mass) will begin at 10:30 am, followed immediately by the traditional Byzantine Catholic memorial service in honor of our Brother Knights who fell asleep in the Lord during this past year. All Brother Knights and their families are encouraged to attend. Coffee and refreshments will follow in the parish hall.

Another Successful Zippy Bun Booth

Many thanks to all the Brother Knights who helped make the Zippy Bun booth at St. Mary’s festival successful again this year, including those who worked shifts and assisted with setup and cleanup. Sales resulted in more than $1,400 in profit for St. Mary’s. Special thanks also go out to Emily and Robert Rossi at Vince’s in West Sacramento, who donated the bread. And of course, a big thank you to Terry Corcoran for all his hard work in once again coordinating the booth!

Check Presented for Newman Student Retreat

Pictured at left is DGK Lewis Muñoz presenting the check to Fr. Roland Ramirez. Our Catholic youth are the future of both the Church and the Knights of Columbus, so it is important for us as Knights to support them in their faith development.

Memorial Mass

On Sunday November 2, members of Council 953 gathered for the council’s annual Memorial Mass at St. George Parish to pray for the repose of our Brothers who fell asleep in the Lord this year. Past 953 chaplain Fr. Brendan McAnerney, pastor of St. George, presided over the Melkite Catholic liturgy and memorial service that followed. Special thanks to both Fr. Brendan and PGK Fred Struck for organizing the memorial.

May the Lord grant eternal rest to our Brothers Norbert Owens, Gordon Machado, Kevin Simpson, Tomasso Didonato, Frank O’Connell, Germanus France, and Florentino Bersola.
