On August 4th, council 953 served beer to thirsty pig roast participants. John, Fred, Lewis, Terry, and Alex slacked the thirst of many while Brother Jerry took a more hands on approach. Arriving early, he helped break down the freshly roasted pigs into more manageable bites with the other men from St. Stephen’s. His presence was unknown to me until I came into the classroom where they were working. The knife-wielding men were happy to see the pitcher of beer I brought for their consumption. Besides serving beer and pork, Terry joined in on the fun by participating in the White Elephant booth across the lawn. He was the proud winner of a large jar of jelly beans, yet the real winner that day was St. Stephens when we handed over more than $100 in tips. This goes to show that fraternity, community, and charity can be fun. Especially handing out over sized beers to those lucky Brother Knights. Thank you one and all.
We are pleased to offer a preventive health event at our hall. Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, will host their affordable, non-invasive and painless health screenings on 10/2/2013. Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heart beat which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount). All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. In order to register for this event and to receive a $10 discount off any package priced above $129, please call 1-888-653-6441 or visit http://www.lifelinescreening.com/community-partners.
This marks the third year that our council has hosted the beer booth at St. Stephen’s. We help serve beer for the parish, talk up the Knights of Columbus, and potentially recruit new members to our council. The cost is free to member Knights who help out, additional guests / families cost extra. We start serving at 4:00 pm and finish around 8:00. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Please contact John Sheldon at DGK (at) KofC953 (dot) org or 916-548-4944 for more information.
St. Mary’s Parish will be holding its 82nd annual festival on Sunday, August, 18, 2014 and as usual, the festival’s Zippy Bun Booth will be set up and run by members of the council. (For newer members not familiar with a zippy bun sandwich, it’s nothing more than a pile of roast beef between two bun halves dripping with aus jus and is one of the most popular food items at the festival.) We’re still in need of volunteers to man some of the two hour shifts as well assisting in setting up on Saturday morning and the take down after the festival closes at 8PM.
If you can help at the booth please contact George Mills at 916-456-4345 or fs (at) koc953 (dot) org. THANKS!
Once again our 6th annual Garage Sale for Charity was a big success! We made over $1000. I never thought it would happen looking over the minimal selection we had this year, but never say die Garage Sale wizard Terry Corcoran pulled it off again! Without Terry’s long hours of work on this project throughout the year it would never happen. Clara’s house Catholic free medical clinic should be happy and proud of Terry again this year! Terry would like to thank the following people, without them NO SALE!……
