Yard Sale Wrap-Up

Many thanks to everyone who helped out with our 8th annual yard sale for charity. I would like to especially thank Dale Edwards for setting up tables and taking leftover items to St. Vincent de Paul and Deseret Industries; Bob and Ann Ocenosak, Alex Kachmar, and John Watling for helping during the sale; to Rudy Nagle for helping clean up; and anyone else whose names I may have forgotten.

The sale continues on Craigslist, with all proceeds – plus those from the sale days – benefiting Clara’s House Clinic.

Check Presented for Newman Student Retreat

Council 953 recently donated $1,000 to support the annual spring retreat for students from the Newman Catholic Community at Sacramento StateAs part of our council’s and our order’s commitment to youth programs, Council 953 recently donated $1,000 to support the annual spring retreat for students from the Newman Catholic Community at Sacramento State. Pictured at left is DGK Lewis Muñoz presenting the check to Fr. Roland Ramirez. Our Catholic youth are the future of both the Church and the Knights of Columbus, so it is important for us as Knights to support them in their faith development.

Another Successful Irish Night Dinner

On March 19th, out council held its annual Irish Night dinner. Although not as well attended as in past years, we did take in over $700 to help fund our council’s activities. Thanks go out to the following Brother Knights for their help in setting up and doing the dinner:

• Matt Herman for his outstanding cooking of the traditional corned beef and cabbage,
• Michael Litwin for taking the advance reservations,
• Greg Wolfe for helping set up and decorate the hall and for selling bar and raffle tickets,
• George Mills for helping set up and decorate the hall, for ordering and picking up the soda bread and ice cream, and for providing one of the raffle gifts,
• Dale Edwards for helping set up and decorate the hall, preparing the guest list with table assignments, arranging for Cristo Rey High School student helpers, providing bulletin items for St. Mary and Sacred Heart churches, updating the flyer for inclusion in the Knight Letter, and acquiring one of the raffle prizes,
• GK John Sheldon for being the Master of Ceremonies and providing many cookies as raffle prizes,
• Terry Corcoran for tending bar and clean up,
• Dick Cutting for manning the check in table to collect the money and advise on table assignments, and
• Tom Nulk for also bartending.

Hopefully I did not leave anyone out. This is the first year in many years that I have not taken on a heavier load to make this dinner a success. I am pleased that so many Brother Knights stepped up this year. I also want to say a BIG THANK YOU to Brother David Carboni for all the years that he has been the head cook for the Irish Night dinner. He is still cooking for some occasions, but he needs and deserves a lot more time out of the kitchen.

Thanks to everyone that attended. See you again next year!

40 Cans for Lent

All Brothers are reminded to please bring their donations to the 40 Cans for Lent program to the April business meeting. As a reminder, the proceeds will first be used to assist any of our Brother Knights and their families who are in need. The remainder will be donated to the food closet at the Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home.

Council Accepting E-Waste Donations

The council is accepting donations of e-waste and scrap metal on a continuous basis. E-waste is any electronic or battery-powered device, including computers, printers, cell phones, and household appliances (except refrigerators). These devices are recycled in exchange for dollars that are used to fund improvements to the hall. E-waste donations may be brought to the council hall or, in some cases, can be picked up from your home or place of business.
