Council 953 Donates Money for Iraqi Christians

In August, Supreme Council announced that the Knights of Columbus would be donating $500,000 to aid Christians suffering persecution and death in Iraq. It was further announced that Supreme would match additional donations made by the public, up to a maximum of an additional $500,000.

At the September Business Meeting, Council 953 answered the call and agreed to write a check for $100 to the relief effort. In addition, a cash collection taken up that evening generated an additional $221 for a total donation of $321 from Council 953. With the match from Supreme, this constitutes $642 for our suffering Christian brethren.

Reminder: E-Waste Donations Still Accepted

The council is accepting donations of e-waste and scrap metal on a continuous basis. E-waste is any electronic or battery-powered device, including computers, printers, cell phones, and household appliances (except refrigerators). These devices are recycled in exchange for dollars that are used to fund improvements to the hall. E-waste donations may be brought to the council hall or, in some cases, can be picked up from your home or place of business.

On Sunday, August 17, St. Mary’s Parish held it’s 83rd annual parish festival. As always, members of Council 953 set up and operated the ever popular Zippy Bun Booth.

Many thanks to Terry Corcoran for chairing the booth this year, as well as to all who lent a hand.

Also in August, the Council received an urgent request from Loaves and Fishes for donations of bottled water to hand out to those they serve.

Many of our Brother Knights answered the call by providing cases of water, which the Council matched case-for-case. Thank you for everyone who made this possible!

Knights of Columbus Announces Fund to Help Christians Threatened with Extinction in Iraq

The Knights of Columbus recently announced that is establishing a fund to assist those – particularly Christians as well as other religious minorities – facing a horrific and violent persecution and possible extinction in Iraq and the surrounding regions.

The Knights has pledged an initial $500,000 and will match an additional $500,000 in donations from the public.

“The unprovoked and systematic persecution and violent elimination of Middle East Christians, as well as other minority groups, especially in Iraq, has created an enormous humanitarian crisis,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “Pope Francis has asked the world for prayers and support for those affected by this terrible persecution, and we are asking our members, and all people of good will, to pray for those persecuted and support efforts to assist them by donating to this fund.”

Anderson added: “It has shocked the conscience of the world that people are systematically being purged from the region where their families have lived for millennia – simply for their faith. It is imperative that we stand in solidarity with them in defense of the freedom of conscience, and provide them with whatever relief we can.”

Those seeking to assist with the relief efforts can donate to K of C Christian Refugee Relief by visiting www.kofc.org/Iraq or by sending checks or money orders to: K of C Christian Refugee Relief, Knights of Columbus Charities, P.O. Box 1966, New Haven, CT 06509-1966.

Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc., is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a charitable organization under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code, and 100 percent of all donations collected by Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc., will be used for humanitarian assistance for those Christians – as well as other religious minorities –being persecuted or displaced in Iraq and the surrounding region.

The Knights of Columbus has a long history of providing humanitarian relief and has done so following Sept. 11, 2001; last year’s typhoons in the Philippines; Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Sandy; tornadoes nationwide; flooding in Mexico; and tsunamis in Indonesia and Japan.

In addition, the Knights of Columbus has also long supported persecuted Christians. Throughout the 1920s, the Knights provided humanitarian assistance and created international awareness of the persecution of the Catholic Church in Mexico.

The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic fraternal organization with more than 1.8 million members worldwide.

Dedicated to charity, Knights last year provided more than $170 million and more than 70 million hours to charitable causes, assisting substantially with several humanitarian disasters from North America to Asia.

This is one more reason we should feel proud of being a member of the Knights of Columbus. Please consider making a donation today. Supreme will match your donation dollar for dollar. Also just as important please remember to pray often for our suffering brothers and sisters in Christ.

Host Family Needed

Brother Knights,

My wife and I are involved with EF: Educational Homestay Programs, a non-profit that immerses foreign students in our language and culture.

We are in urgent need of a host family for an EF leader/teacher (male 44), from July 22nd to August 4th. What makes this challenging is that he is requesting a Christian family in particular. The host needs to be near public transportation since he is working in Downtown Sacramento from 8 to 6, M-F. The family will need to provide room and board, plus share some of their time with him. My wife and I have been blessed to host several students over the years. She found it so rewarding, she now helps place students with host families.

Please contact me for more information if you want to host this person in particular or one of the many students who will be landing on our shores in the coming weeks. Please use the contact form below.
