As in recent years, Council 953 selected four graduating seniors at Cristo Rey High School to receive our $500 scholarship awards. Brother
Adam Struck accompanied me to make the presentation on May 20th at the school’s new location on Jackson Highway. This year’s awards went to: Oliverio Barragan, Jezabel Galvan, Maria Reyes and Miriam Pintor.
This is one of the best uses of our council dollars that is made possible by our annual dues. Thanks to all our members for being a part of this program.
Our council’s Basketball Free Throw Championship was held at Sacred Heart and St. Mary’s schools in January. Sacred Heart had 86 participants and St. Mary’s had 131 for a total of 217 participants. That is a new record high for our council. As happened last year, the two schools had an equal number of winners for our council – six for each. I will be attending assemblies at each school in the coming weeks to present the trophies to our 12 council winners and certificates to the 12 school winners at each school. I appreciate the help I received this
year in running the contest from Brother Knights Floyd Wells, George Mills and Al Piccardo. The District championship is scheduled for February 14th and the Chapter championship will be on February 21st.
Next on the horizon for Youth Activities will be the review of scholarship candidates for our annual scholarship awards.
Congratulations to Cristo Rey High School seniors Janeth Angeles Esparza, Yessica Contreras, Vivian Martinez, and Miguel Molina, who are the recipients of this year’s college scholarships from Council 953. These four worthy students were selected by the council’s officers from a list of nominees chosen by the faculty of Cristo Rey for their academic and other achievements. Each student was presented with a check for $500 by GK Fred Struck at a recent school assembly.
There were a total of 186 kids, both boys and girls age 9 through 14, who participated this year at St. Mary and Sacred Heart Schools. Out of those 186, we have 12 council best shooters, 6 boys and 6 girls. The split between the two schools is quite even this year with 6 winners at each school making up our council champions. Each of these 12 students are going on to the District Free Throw Championship, which will be held on Saturday, February 8th at the St. Philomene School gym.
My thanks go out to our council helpers this year, some of whom are regulars: George Mills, Alex Kachmar, Dick Cutting, Frank Philips, and Ricardo Saldaña.
Council 953 is beginning to consider which graduating seniors from Cristo Rey High School will receive our four $500 scholarships this year. I recently received information on six candidates for our scholarships from CRHS. Our Council officers will be deciding on our four winners this year at the April officer’s meeting. The scholarship awards will be presented to the students at an awards ceremony tentatively scheduled to occur on Monday, May 20th at CRHS.
This year, our Council held the contest at St. Mary’s and Sacred Heart schools. Between the two schools 170 kids participated, and the ten Council winners were evenly split between the two schools. The ten winners will go on to participate in the district championship on February 2nd at St. Joseph’s school in North Sacramento.
My thanks to my Brother Knight helpers this year: George Mills, Frank Philips, Alex Kachmar, John Sheldon and Jesse Williams. Some of these are repeat helpers. Thanks again, I couldn’t do the contest without you.
Good news for our Council’s kids. Out of ten winners in the district contest, our Council had six of the winners. They were evenly split, 3 from St. Mary’s and 3 from Sacred Heart.
