Poll: Success Linked to Ethics

A poll of Americans confirmed that religious beliefs and values should be an integral guide to business decision making.

Unfortunately, those surveyed also revealed they believe personal and corporate profits drives executives’ decisions. Overall, a majority of Americans believe that the moral compass of corporate America points in the wrong direction. In addition, most Americans believe corporate executive decisions reflect a misguided tenet that share holders interests are more important than the customer or the employees. Only 19 percent of Americans would award corporate America a grade of A or B for its honesty and ethical conduct.

The positive side is that 75 percent of Americans surveyed believe that it is possible to be successful and ethical in business. They also believe that high ethical standards strengthen a company’s advantage over its competitors, in both the short- and long-term.

It is of paramount importance that all Knights recognize the moral and ethical commitment of the Order to serve its members and their families. Our commitment is to present the best advice and provide the best options to protect our member’s families. “Brother Knights assisting Brother Knights”.

Council Accepting E-Waste Donations

The council is accepting donations of e-waste and scrap metal on a continuous basis. E-waste is any electronic or battery-powered device, including computers, printers, cell phones, and household appliances (except refrigerators). These devices are recycled in exchange for dollars that are used to fund improvements to the hall. E-waste donations may be brought to the hall or, in some cases, can be picked up from your home or place of business.

Culture of Life Report for September 2014

Brother Knights,

Prayer is where we start when we first open our eyes in the morning and it is with prayer that we finish our tasks of the day. It’s in seeking Jesus Christ with all our hearts that culture is built and society is renewed. It’s in prayer, the sacraments, preaching homilies, forgiving and seeking forgiveness—all in the spirit of charity—that, brick by brick, we bring about the kingdom of God. So it is with the sanctity of life.

I invite you to join tens of thousands of others who are offering, each day, a prayer of commitment to build a culture of life. I urge you to pray, throughout the year, the daily prayer to end abortion. I invite you to join in saying the following prayer each day.

O God, we acknowledge you today as Lord, not only of individuals, but of nations and governments.

We thank you for the privilege of being able to organize ourselves politically and of knowing that political loyalty does not have to mean disloyalty to you.

We thank you for your law, which our Founding Fathers acknowledged and recognized as higher than any human law.

We thank you for the opportunity that this election year puts before us, to exercise our solemn duty not only to vote, but to influence countless others to vote, and to vote correctly.

It’s in seeking Jesus Christ with all our hearts that culture is built and society is renewed. It’s in prayer, the sacraments, changing diapers, balancing budgets, preaching homilies, loving a spouse, forgiving and seeking forgiveness—all in the spirit of charity—that, brick by brick, we bring about the kingdom of God. Are the eyes that read the names on the ballot, and that they do not cease to be Christians when they enter the voting booth.

Awaken your people to a commitment to justice to the sanctity of marriage and the family, to the dignity of each individual human life, and to the truth that human rights begin when human lives begin, and not one moment later.

Lord, we rejoice today that we are citizens of your kingdom. May that make us all the more committed to being faithful citizens on earth.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Brother Knights, we should not forget what has brought us together as Knights; as we are the defenders of the Catholic Church. Therefore, each of us has the responsibility to act individually and as a group to protect the “culture of life” of our Church.

God Bless,
Hector Garcia, Culture of Life Director

Knights of Columbus Announces Fund to Help Christians Threatened with Extinction in Iraq

The Knights of Columbus recently announced that is establishing a fund to assist those – particularly Christians as well as other religious minorities – facing a horrific and violent persecution and possible extinction in Iraq and the surrounding regions.

The Knights has pledged an initial $500,000 and will match an additional $500,000 in donations from the public.

“The unprovoked and systematic persecution and violent elimination of Middle East Christians, as well as other minority groups, especially in Iraq, has created an enormous humanitarian crisis,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “Pope Francis has asked the world for prayers and support for those affected by this terrible persecution, and we are asking our members, and all people of good will, to pray for those persecuted and support efforts to assist them by donating to this fund.”

Anderson added: “It has shocked the conscience of the world that people are systematically being purged from the region where their families have lived for millennia – simply for their faith. It is imperative that we stand in solidarity with them in defense of the freedom of conscience, and provide them with whatever relief we can.”

Those seeking to assist with the relief efforts can donate to K of C Christian Refugee Relief by visiting www.kofc.org/Iraq or by sending checks or money orders to: K of C Christian Refugee Relief, Knights of Columbus Charities, P.O. Box 1966, New Haven, CT 06509-1966.

Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc., is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a charitable organization under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code, and 100 percent of all donations collected by Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc., will be used for humanitarian assistance for those Christians – as well as other religious minorities –being persecuted or displaced in Iraq and the surrounding region.

The Knights of Columbus has a long history of providing humanitarian relief and has done so following Sept. 11, 2001; last year’s typhoons in the Philippines; Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Sandy; tornadoes nationwide; flooding in Mexico; and tsunamis in Indonesia and Japan.

In addition, the Knights of Columbus has also long supported persecuted Christians. Throughout the 1920s, the Knights provided humanitarian assistance and created international awareness of the persecution of the Catholic Church in Mexico.

The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic fraternal organization with more than 1.8 million members worldwide.

Dedicated to charity, Knights last year provided more than $170 million and more than 70 million hours to charitable causes, assisting substantially with several humanitarian disasters from North America to Asia.

This is one more reason we should feel proud of being a member of the Knights of Columbus. Please consider making a donation today. Supreme will match your donation dollar for dollar. Also just as important please remember to pray often for our suffering brothers and sisters in Christ.

Grand Knight’s Message, August 2014

To My Brother Knights and Their Families:

Hot August Nights is a great way to describe the bevy of activities, past, present, and future. I want to thank Bryan McKrell for organizing the Council Picnic on July 12th, which was fun and relaxing. Coming up shortly are St. Stephen’s Pg Roast on the 3rd, the Steak Dinner on the 9th, Zippy Buns on the 17th, and Mexican Knight on September 20th. I encourage any new Brother Knights to volunteer; even one hour is helpful. As they say “many hands makes for light work.”

The officers have established the following goals/challenges for the year: 1. Membership, member involvement and sunshine. 2. Greater service hours and charitable giving. 3. Quarterly “Fun” Knights. 4. Hall Improvements.

Speaking of “The Hall,” it is here for our benefit, and there is no better way to help than making their Steak Dinner a success. I am grateful for our Hall Board, because without their dedication, raising funds to meet our charitable goals would be much more difficult.

Go! Make a difference…
