Results of This Year’s Basketball Free Throw Championships

There were a total of 186 kids, both boys and girls age 9 through 14, who participated this year at St. Mary and Sacred Heart Schools. Out of those 186, we have 12 council best shooters, 6 boys and 6 girls. The split between the two schools is quite even this year with 6 winners at each school making up our council champions. Each of these 12 students are going on to the District Free Throw Championship, which will be held on Saturday, February 8th at the St. Philomene School gym.
My thanks go out to our council helpers this year, some of whom are regulars: George Mills, Alex Kachmar, Dick Cutting, Frank Philips, and Ricardo Saldaña.

Spouses can be Important to the Charitable Works of the Order

As a member of this council, you know how important spouses can be to the charitable works of the Order. If you’re married, your wife is probably involved in a few of the many events that happen each fraternal year. This support adds great value and impact to what a council can
achieve.

When the Order was founded in 1882, Father Michael J. McGivney and the other brave men were setting out to protect Catholic families, but especially wives and children. We know today this is done through our insurance products which are designed with that goal in mind. One specific policy rider that you may not know about is called Spousal Waiver of Premium. This rider is unique to the Knights of Columbus
philosophy of helping our widows.

This rider is available on most permanent and Discoverer plans purchased at standard rates by a member and his wife on the same day. When both spouses apply, the rider provides for waiver of premiums on the spouse’s contract in the event of the insured’s death. Best of all, for members and spouses ages 18 to 60, this waiver can be added for no charge. The rider stays in effect until the spouse attains age 65 or certain other triggering events occur.

Our products are designed with your needs and budget in mind. With a solid portfolio of life insurance, long-term care, disability income and retirement products, the Knights of Columbus can help you meet all of your financial goals. To learn more about these solutions, contact me today.

Culture of Life Report for February 2014

Brother Knights,

Together we can celebrate God’s wonderful gift of human life and as a group we should ask our government to respect and protect life from its very beginning. We need to work on this.
I urge you to support legislation to take us one small step toward a society that promotes life and not death for unborn children and their mothers. The No  Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act (H.R. 7) is sponsored by Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Dan Lipinski (D-IL) and 163 other members. It deserves your support.

H.R. 7  will write into permanent law a policy on which there has been strong popular and congressional agreement for over 37 years: The federal government should not use its funding power to support and promote elective abortion, and should not force taxpayers to subsidize this violence. Even public officials who take a “pro-choice” stand, and courts that have insisted on a constitutional “right” to abortion, have agreed that the government has every right to “encourage childbirth over abortion.”

Please contact your Congressional Representative  and urge him/her to vote for H.R. 7 when it comes before the full House of Representatives.
Please Pray !

Please come pray for LIFE on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday morning this week, 9:00 am to 11:00 am, which is when abortions are done at 1442 Ethan Way.

The Last Word

There are many ways you can be a “citizen lobbyist” on behalf of the sanctity of life at the local, state, and federal levels. I will be providing more information on this topic in the coming months.

Grand Knight’s Message, January 2014

To My Brother Knights and Their Families:

I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Everyone had a great time at the Christmas potluck. Thanks to all who donated items for the mothers in need and thanks also to Bill Renard for taking those items to the Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home. Thanks also to all who cooked, especially Dave Carboni and Steve Mills for cooking the ham. Also thanks to all who provided items for Santa to give the children, and to Santa himself for taking the time to come during the busy season.

As we begin the new year we look forward to many events. On January 11, 2014 we have a Second and Third Degree Exemplification at St. Paul Parish Hall, 8720 Florin Road, Sacramento CA 95828. If you haven’t taken your second and third degree yet, please consider taking them on the 11th. Please contact me or our Membership director Kevin Simpson if you plan on going.

Our Crab Feed is on Saturday January 18th. This is one of our big fund raisers. There are many ways you can help out. Help is needed with donating raffle prizes, setting up, food preparation, serving the food, selling raffle tickets or cleaning up after the event. You can also help by coming to the Dinner and bringing a friend. If you can help please call Al Piccardo at 916-381-4747 or leave a message on the hall phone at 916-736-0953.

Thank you.

Where did 2013 go?

It seems like it was summer yesterday and Easter was last week. I hope you and your family had a great finish to 2013. Now, the first quarter of 2014 is speeding by.

Hopefully, you’ve established a few goals for this year. I’ve learned a great tip regarding resolutions. First, write them down. It’s not too late if you haven’t already done this. Commit your goals to paper and post it someplace you will see it often. Writing down a goal is the first step towards achieving it. I don’t know exactly how this works, but I’ve heard stories of the success this simple task can bring. Whether your goal is to exercise more, give more to charity, read more or watch less television, you’re more likely to accomplish it if you write it down.

Second, resolve to have an expert look at your finances. I recommend that you have a team of experts help you, and I should be among the first you sit with. Schedule some time to visit with me, your professional Knights of Columbus insurance agent, and I’ll provide an “insurance check-up” (at no cost!) that will quickly identify any gaps in your family’s life insurance program. And you’ll want to fill those gaps now, not later. Unlike many other products, you don’t just need money to obtain life insurance; you also need good health, and no one knows when your health could change.

Did I mention my check-up is free of charge? When was the last time you received something for free that could be providing value to you and your family for generations? Call me today.

Grand Knight’s Message, December 2013

To My Brother Knights and Their Families:

During this time of the year, as we prepare for the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we must remember that it is not the festive season that is portrayed by the world around us. For us as Christians, it is a time of preparation and reflection. Our focus needs to be on preparing for the birth of Christ. At this time of the year we should be spending extra time in prayer, fasting, and charity. Attend extra church services, have a meatless meal once or more each week. Remember the first principle of the Order, charity. Try to limit the celebration until Christmas Eve.

The celebration of Christmas for us begins on Christmas Eve and lasts until January 6th, the Feast of the Epiphany. When Christmas arrives keep the celebration going for the entire 12 days. Make the feast of Epiphany a special celebration in your home. We had a very successful Shrimp Dinner last month. We raised over $3,200. Many thanks to Al Picardo and all who helped out with the dinner. Further information about the dinner will follow.

Thank you.
