Hello, My name is Fred Struck. I live in Sacramento California. I am a member of St. George Melkite-Greek Catholic Church where I am know as Reader Fred. I have been the Reader at St. George's since 1988. I am also a Past Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus Sacramento Council 953.

Council 953 Welcomes New Chaplain

Fr. Brendan
Fr. Brendan

Welcome to our new Chaplin for Council 953, Fr. Brendan McAnerney, O.P. Fr. Brendan is a Dominican priest ordained in the Latin Rite, with faculties granted by His Holiness John Paul II to serve as a Melkite-Greek Catholic priest.

He has been serving at St. George parish since 1999 and became a resident priest in 2001 while directing DominICON, a “Ministry to Enhance Appreciation of Holy Icons and the Traditions of the Eastern Churches.” He was appointed Pastor in 2011 by the Most Reverend Nicholas J. Samra, Bishop of Newton.

Don’t Wait, Act Today

When your family is hungry, you see that this need is taken care of quickly. You don’t put it off
until tomorrow; you act immediately to the best of your ability. As a provider to your wife and
children, your responsibilities are great and your time is spread thin. It is easy to forget
important tasks or let them slip to the back burner for later.
Every day, including your health, can change in the blink of an eye. Don’t do it tomorrow what
you can do today. As your professional Knights of Columbus agent, I urge you to make securing life insurance
for you and your family a top priority.
It is my fraternal obligation to make sure that every member has the opportunity to protect his family with the
Order’s top-rated insurance products. I will work with you and put a plan in place that will help your family
when that help is what they needed the most.
Your K of C insurance program is second to none. As the premier safety net for Catholic families for more than
130 years, our insurance program makes me proud. I’m very concerned that too many of our brother knights
have not yet looked into the needs of their families. I think for many of them, life insurance has drifted to the
back burner until to-morrow. Don’t be one of them. Move your insurance needs to the forefront today.
Let’s get together as soon as possible.
Brotherly yours,
Justin Tanjuaquio, FICF

Culture of Life Report for August 2013

The next 40 Days for Life campaign will be taking place from September 25 through November 3. For those of
you who are not familiar, 40 Days for Life is an organized national campaign of prayer, fasting, peaceful vigil,
and community outreach to end abortion. The most visible component of the campaign is a 40-day prayer vigil
outside abortion clinics across the country.
Here in Sacramento, 40 Days for Life vigils have been held in the past on the sidewalk in front of the abortion
business located at 1750 Wright Street. Many of you have prayed there in the past, both during the campaign
and on other occasions throughout the year. In the past, mothers about to enter the clinic to have abortions
have changed their minds and chosen life thanks to the prayers and compassion of those present outside!
Just recently, the owners of that property made clear their intentions to sell the building, forcing the clinic to
vacate by September 1. As you can see, our prayerful presence has clearly made a difference! Let us pray that
we may have the same impact at the clinic’s new location, which it appears will be in a building at the corner of
Ethan Way and Hallmark Drive.

Bryan McKreel, Family of the Month July 2013

We are very pleased and honored to announce that the family of Bryan McKrell, has been selected as the Family of the Month for the month of July 2013. Bryan is currently the Recorder of our Council and has also been the Family Director of our Council for the past year. As Family Director he has organized a Family Night and has also recently organized a Family Picnic.

Grand Knight’s Message, July 2013

To my brother knights & their families,

Thank you for placing your confidence in me to represent our Council as your Grand Knight for the Columbian year of 2013-2014. I especially wish to thank our Past Grand Knight Ricardo Saldana for his dedication and hard work to our Council these past two years.

I joined this Council in 1985 then dropped out due to lack of interest. I rejoined the Council seven years ago but I was not active in the Council. Four years ago George Mills called me and asked me if I would consider running  for Inside Guard. Shortly after that Jess Williams asked me to join the Second Degree Team. We talk a lot about recruitment, but sometimes we just need to ask inactive knights to become active in the Council or for those who have left the Knights of Columbus if they would consider rejoining our Council.

Tom Nulk made a suggestion to me and I completely agree with him. Ask a member of our Council who is inactive to come to one meeting, come to one dinner and to help out at one fund raiser every year. If each one of us did this think of how much better our Council could be.

Many thanks for all who worked hard to make the Past Grand Knight’s/Old Timers Dinner a great success. I especially want to thank Dave Carboni, Terry Corcoran, Steve Mills, Tom Nulk, George Mills, John Sheldon, John Watling,  Matthew Lucien, Joe Miceli,  Ricardo Saldana and anyone whose name I may have forgotten.

Also a big thank you to our Family Director Bryan McKrell for organizing, setting up and cooking hot dogs for the Council’s Family Picnic. It was a very hot day but all who attended had a good time.

We are looking for a Pro-Life Director and a Membership Director for our Council. If you are interested please contact me.

Thank you.
Go! Make a difference…

Culture of Life Report for July 2013

From June 27-29, the National Right to Life Convention was held in Dallas, TX. NRLC is the largest annual gathering of pro-life activists, who this year came together to hear over 100 speakers address topics such as abortion, stem cell research, and other life issues. This annual convention is an opportunity for people from all across the nation to come together and examine where efforts to defend life have been successful and learn how to become even more involved in political efforts to protect innocent life.“

Ironically, the convention opened a few short days after Texas state Senator Wendy Davis made national headlines by blocking a bill that would have placed restrictions on where abortion clinics are allowed to operate in Texas and banned abortions after 20 weeks, when science tells us that babies in the womb begin to feel pain. Senator Davis’ 13 hour filibuster – which took place amid angry mobs of protestors disrupting debate – effectively killed the bill, though Texas’ governor has called a special session to address the matter again. Nine other states have adopted a similar ban on abortions after 20 weeks.

Not surprisingly, this dominated discussion at the convention. U.S. Senator Ted Cruz – one of the keynote speakers – said that it was “unfortunate that we saw people using tactics to try to disrupt the legislative process and to stop elected representatives from voting their principles and from voting for a policy that is supported by a large majority of Texans.” Other speakers encouraged the activists gathered to contact members of the Texas legislature and urge them to support this legislation, which polls indicate has wide support throughout Texas.

The theme of this year’s NRLC was “40 Years of Roe vs. Wade is 40 Years Too Many.” Recent events such as the Texas abortion bill and the murder conviction of Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell remind us that the fight to protect the unborn is far from over. In many ways, the fight is only growing stronger. NRLC President Carol Tobias spoke optimistically of the pro-life movement’s future:
“You, the grassroots pro-lifers, from all over the country, are amazing. Because of your efforts, unborn children WILL some day be protected by law, and protections will be restored for the elderly and disabled, whose lives are threatened by assisted suicide, euthanasia, and rationing of medical care.”
Let us pray that our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ will continue to guide and bless our efforts to protect the sanctity of life.

*******************************************************************************************

Thus, you read the word of God, spoken to Jeremias: “Before I formed thee in the womb, I knew thee.” If God forms us in the womb, He also breathes on us as He did in the beginning: “And God formed man and breathed into him the breath of life.” Nor could God have known man in the womb unless he were a whole man. “And before thou camest forth from the womb, I sanctified thee.” Was it, then, a dead body at that stage? Surely it was not, for “God is the God of the living and not the dead.”

In our case, murder being once for all forbidden, we may not destroy even the foetus in the womb, while as yet the human being derives blood from other parts of the body for its sustenance. To hinder a birth is merely a speedier man – killing; nor does it matter whether you take away a life that is born, or destroy one that is coming to the birth. That is a man which is going to be one; you have the fruit already in the seed.

Tertullian (c. 160 – 240)
