Memorial Mass

On Sunday November 2, members of Council 953 gathered for the council’s annual Memorial Mass at St. George Parish to pray for the repose of our Brothers who fell asleep in the Lord this year. Past 953 chaplain Fr. Brendan McAnerney, pastor of St. George, presided over the Melkite Catholic liturgy and memorial service that followed. Special thanks to both Fr. Brendan and PGK Fred Struck for organizing the memorial.

May the Lord grant eternal rest to our Brothers Norbert Owens, Gordon Machado, Kevin Simpson, Tomasso Didonato, Frank O’Connell, Germanus France, and Florentino Bersola.

Christmas Yard Sale

A Christmas yard sale will be held at the council hall on Friday, November 28 and Saturday, November 29 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The proceeds will go toward the cost of repairing the hall’s back parking lot. Your donations of saleable items are needed and will be accepted until the days of the sale. Donations may be dropped off at the hall (back parking lot next to the garage), or you may call Terry Corcoran at 224-7786 to discuss possible pick up. Additionally, volunteers are needed to help during the sale.

Please call Terry if you are able to help.

Knights & Families of the Month – October 2014

October AwardsIn light of there being so many individuals to thank for 953’s successful Mexican Night dinner, the Grand Night named multiple Knights of the Month in October.

The Knights of the Month are Ricardo Saldaña and Lewis Muñoz, who organized Mexican Night, as well as Lewis’ father Frank Muñoz, who came up from Los Angeles to help.

In addition, the Muñoz and Saldaña families were named Families of the Month in appreciation of all their hard work for Mexican Night. Some family members literally spent the entire day in the kitchen helping to prepare the delicious food we all enjoyed.

Council Makes Donation to Boles Fire Victims

On September 15, the Boles Fire swept through the town of Weed in Siskiyou County and destroyed Holy Family Church and the adjacent St. Michael’s Community Hall, where Mount Shasta Council 2599 is based. Both the parish community and Council 2599 lost everything in the fire. In response to a request for assistance from the Northern California Chapter, Council 953 made a donation of $250 to the relief efforts at the October Business meeting.

Please continue to pray for the Holy Family Community and our Brothers at Council 2599.

November – LTC Awareness Month

About 70 percent of individuals over 65 will require at least some type of long-term care services during their lifetime. Over 40 percent will need care in a nursing home for some period of time. Factors that increase your risk of needing long-term care are:

  • Age – The risk generally increases as you get older.
  • Marital Status – Single people are more likely to need care from a paid provider.
  • Gender – Women are at higher risk than men, primarily because they tend to live longer.

Notice all the older widows at church- I guarantee there are many more who are homebound or in Assisted Living.

  • Lifestyle – Poor Diet and exercise habits can increase your risk.
  • Health and Family History – also impact your risk.

While most people who need long-term care are 65 or older, a person can need long-term care services at any age. Forty (40) percent of people currently receiving long-term care are adults 18 to 64 years old. Yes, the history of many Long Term Care Providers can be discouraging, but the Knights of Columbus is unique. Premiums have never been raised and clients have not been denied access to their benefits because of the fine print. I will explain your policy in detail with your family present, and there are options that can fit most peoples’ budget. If you are 40, ask yourself. Do I pay $100/month now or pay $6000/month in today’s dollars for care I need in the future.

Some of you are thinking, I have Cal-PERS (just days ago another “across-the-board” premium increase announcement), or I have Veteran Benefits (long waits for care), or I can utilize Medi-Care (limited benefits), or I will be covered under Medi-Cal (no money left-poor care). My current policy is all I need (see above). Why not get a second opinion?

Husbands, you owe it to your future widow to consider her Long Term Care after she took care of you.

If you are not currently a LTC policyholder, I suggest that we schedule some time together so that I can provide additional information on how you can avail yourself of this significant, value added benefit.
