Chili Cook-Off – Another great event…
This is a huge note of thanks to all Knights and families who participated and/or worked at our Chili Cook-Off, especially our chair, GK Ricardo and his committee. We had eight teams in the competition with lots of chili to taste and enjoyable music via the talents of Jordan Sax.
Congratulations to Brother Ryan Remis for winning Best of Show with his chili entry, as well as the other winners in their respective categories.
As a result of this event, we are able to split the proceeds of nearly $1,100 between Sacramento Life Center and Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home.

I’d also like to acknowledge and thank those businesses that donated prizes to the event:

Tapa the World – 21st & J Streets

“The next thing we must be concerned about if we are to have peace on earth and good will toward men is the nonviolent affirmation of the sacredness of all human life. …Man is a child of God, made in His image, and therefore must be respected as such….And when we truly believe in the sacredness of human personality, we won’t exploit people, we won’t trample over people with the iron feet of oppression, we won’t kill anybody.” Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – Christmas Day sermon, 1967

November – LTC Awareness Month

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS INSURANCE “Your Shield For Life”.

November – LTC Awareness Month

Common LTC misconceptions
As Baby Boomers have reached retirement years, long-term care (LTC) insurance products have gotten more public attention, but they’re still not well understood, especially when it comes to how to pay for care. For example, many Americans believe that Medicare pays for long-term assistance with the basic activities of daily living — but it doesn’t. It applies only to those who have been in the hospital 72 hours and are diagnosed as requiring “skilled care.” Medicaid covers care only if and when the person has gone through a “spend down” and has no other means to pay for it. Not a good situation to be in.

Another common issue is that Boomers think they can wait to buy LTC. Unfortunately, this could be a financial devastating choice. What happens if you suddenly become ill or uninsurable before you have made this purchase? Again, not a good situation.

Waiting to buy will also increase the cost of the premiums you pay. Consider this example. If you buy a Knights of Columbus Comprehensive Long-Term Care policy for yourself with a $200 daily benefit, lifetime benefit duration and 30-day elimination period at age 40, your annual premium will be $739.20. The total premium paid by age 85 will be $33,264. If you decide to wait to buy the same policy until you are 60 years old, your annual premium will be $2,374 and the total premium paid by age 85 will be $59,350. That’s a difference of more than $26,000. (This example is for comparison purposes only.)

Personal service is crucial in choosing LTC policy options, and for adjusting them as necessary. Group LTC may indeed be a viable option for you, but as your Knights of Columbus agent, I can help you compare the details so you can make an informed decision.

MR Drive-Thanks

On Oct. 15 & 16, 2011, the council conducted its annual “Tootsie Roll” Drive after all the masses at St. Mary’s. Following are those who helped man the doors of the church handing out tootsie rolls and collecting donations: Dale Edwards, Frank Philips, Floyd Wells, Bill Sheean, Dominic Ielati, John Bashore, Bill James and Terry Corcoran. Through their efforts we collected $680.76, one of our best collections for the past few years. Congratulations and thanks, brothers!

Knight of the Month September 2011

Knight og the Month September 2011We are very pleased and honored to announce that Brother Terry Corcoran was elected as the Knight of the Month for the month of September 2011. Quite frankly brothers, we couldn’t operate with out the many unselfish efforts of Terry. Firstly, he is our hall custodian/repairman/gardener and jack of all trades. Secondly he is one of our core hall cooks and many of our events just wouldn’t happen without his help. Speaking of his help, I can’t think of one council event he hasn’t been involved in some capacity. Lately he has been filling in at the bar for the council and 4th degree. He is also the chairman of the annual garage sale which last year donated over $1,100 to local Catholic charities and I understand he has another fund raiser up his sleeve towards the end of this year??

Brothers lets give a hand of thanks to Terry! May he be with us for a long, long time, he is much appreciated.

Family of the Month September 2011

Family of the Month September 2011It is a privilege and honor to have the Nulk family as September family of the month. When you think of Knights of Columbus #953 the Nulk name has to come to mind. Charlie Nulk has been our Grand Knight twice, past chapter president, former District Deputy and Hall board chief for many years! He also was the chairman of German night for many, many years when it was so big it was held at St Francis High School. and attended by over 400 people (now that’s a job!!) His son Tom is our Hall bartender and chairs the bar at the St Mary’s festival. Tom is also part of St. Mary’s basketball night and has recently recruited many of our new Knights! Charlie has now passed German night to his son Tom, who has chaired it the last few years. Also German night would not have been a success without Pat Nulk who’s hard work and advise has been a blessing, right up to the current German night!!

So lets all give a big hand to the Nulk family not only for German Knight but their selfless giving to the Knights of Columbus #953 throughout the years! Thank you!

Grand Knight’s Message October 2011

To My Brother Knights & Their Families,

Unity has a definition of – Harmony or agreement between people or groups. As Knights of Columbus we are in agreement to stand with our Church and defend her teachings. We are a practical group of catholic gentlemen. We help those in need, volunteer at our Churches & are shining examples for the younger generations.  We are unified in our beliefs & this can be seen through our love & practice of our faith.

We are unified in our actions. We witness publicly & privately during 40 days for life. We Pray everyday for God’s will to be done. We help each other by lending an ear to a friend experiencing a difficult situation, visiting a family member & Bother Knight unable to leave their homes  or  by attending/volunteering at a K of C event.

Such events happen through out the year with new ones being added. This month (in addition to 2 tootsie roll drives at both Sacred Heart & St. Mary’s)  we will be speaking at St. Andrews Sunday October 23rd to talk about our organization & recruit potential new Knights.  We also have our Octoberfest on the 29th at the hall. These are just some of the opportunities we have to show our unity & support not only for the Knights of Columbus, but our Church as well. The more members our council has, the more prevalent God’s work becomes.

“St. John Vianney, Pray for Us.”
