Chili Cook-Off
Thanks to all of you who participated in the Chili Cook-Off this year.  Thanks to all Brother Knights for working and participating in this year’s event.  A longer report will be provided in the November Knightletter.

40 Days For Life – September 28th  to November 6th
We have entered a period of prayer & fast that will change history.  The fall vigil is taking place at the Women’s Health Specialists abortion business at 1750 Wright Street off Alta Arden Expy.
Good news!  Since the 40 Days for Life prayer vigil was begun in 2007, a total of 16 abortion clinics have closed across America, including (2) during September.  This could not have happened without your prayer, fasts & witness to life.

Please sign up today to pray, fast, & witness with others around America and the world.  Your family members are welcome and encouraged to participate in the vigil as well.  Please sign them up when you sign up for the vigil.  Please email me or call me so I can put you on our council’s prayer-fast-witness list.

As we participate with so many others across our country, please remember that this is a spiritual battle – to win a spiritual battle we cannot put our faith in laws, politicians or judges – we must use spiritual weaponry – prayer, sacrifice & faithful witness. These are what are needed to bring an end to abortion in our country and the world.

P.S. In order to stay informed of all the 40 Days for Life news, go to the website at www.40daysforlife.com/sacramento and register your name and contact info.  You will receive informative updates on 40DFL as well as other local pro-life news.

“Through moral conscience God speaks to each of us, inviting us to defend human life at all times, and in this personal bond with the Creator lies the profound dignity of moral conscience and the reason for its inviolability…it is necessary that society as a whole must defend the conceived child’s right to life and the true good of the woman who can never, in any circumstances, find fulfillment in the decision to abort.”  Pope Benedict XVI, addressing members of the Pontifical Academy for Life on Feb. 26, 2011.

“Live On” or “Leave On” Money

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS INSURANCE “Your Shield For Life”.

“Live On” or “Leave On” Money
As your working life progresses, your priorities will likely shift. Many major life events (weddings, births, education costs for children, etc.) are probably behind you. Your focused shifts to those “golden” retired years when you can enjoy your hobbies, grandchildren, travel or simply relaxing at home.
During my career as a field agent, I’ve had members ask me what they should do with a sum of money they are looking to “dump” somewhere for safe keeping. First, I tell them that there is no safer place to put their money than with the Knights of Columbus. No one has ever lost money using our retirement products. There are no risks assumed by you, the members. Second, I ask the member a question: Is this money to “live on” or “leave on”?
I ask this because the answer makes all the difference. If you want a guaranteed flow of cash in retirement, one of our annuity options might meet your needs. If this money is intended as a gift for grandchildren, to assist your wife in the event of your passing or to give to your favorite charity, a Single Premium Whole Life policy might be the best product.
When it comes to decisions about your finances and your family’s future, don’t leave things to chance. Discuss the options with a brother Knight who knows how to help. Someone who’s helped many other Catholic families not too different from yours. You have someone who can offer you life insurance, long-term care and retirement products that are backed by the strength and security of the Knights of Columbus. There is not a higher rated insurer in North America than the Knights of Columbus.

Call me today to set up a time to meet. You’ll only regret that you didn’t call sooner., please call my office at (916) 691-4571 or e-mail me at hank.cornell@kofc.org.

Family Rosary Crusade 2011

It is my pleasure to write to you regarding the upcoming Family Rosary Crusade on October 15, 2011 which commemorates the 50th anniversary of the original event organized by Fr. Patrick Peyton in San Francisco with more than 500,000 participants in Golden Gate Park. Father Peyton was the priest who coined the famous phrase “the family that prays together stays together”.

The Knights of Columbus at the Saint Francis Chapter is a co-sponsor of this historic event together with the Legion of Mary and the Immaculate Heart Radio. There will be an estimated 20,000 participants. The Archdiocese of San Francisco, the dioceses of Oakland and San Jose will all participate. In fact, the bishops of these dioceses will be present. It will be held on October 15, 2011 at the Civic Center Plaza in front of the San Francisco City Hall at 12:00 noon.

October 15 will be upon us relatively shortly. We cordially invite you all to come to the event and also ask that you, the Grand Knights, and all others who have received this letter, to actively promote this Family Rosary Crusade among all the members of your Councils by encouraging all your members to attend the event wearing their Council jackets if they have them, offer to help your parishes in promoting the event among the parishioners with pastors’ permission. There shall be a general call-out from the 4th Degree Masters for substantial Color Corps presence.

Family of the Month August 2011

Family of the Month August 2011Brothers, we are very pleased and honored to announce that the family of Brother Andy Thielan, was elected as the Family of the Month for the month of August 2011..

Andy’s family attended St. Mary’s parish, where he sponsored one of the $80 every 80 minute raffle in addition to volunteering at the bar in Giovanni hall during the St. Mary’s festival. Andy has volunteered at the St. Stephens family feast and participated in the dinners provided to us during our business meeting the last few months. His wife has served a few years as a member of the pastoral council and currently serves as its president. She volunteers heavily with St. Mary’s school and parish and is also a Eucharistic minister. Two of his sons currently attend Jesuit high school and he has another at St. Mary’s elementary. All of his son’s have served as altar boys. In show of support, his entire family showed up at both St. Mary’s festival and St. Stephens’s family feast. He also heads St. Mary’s basketball night. It is with much thanks and appreciation that this month’s “Family of the Month” is Andy Thielan’s Family.

Members of the Knights of Columbus Council 953 wishing the Andy Thielan family, MANY-MANY HAPPY YEARS!

Knight of the Month August 2011

Knight of the Month August 2011Brothers, we are very pleased and honored to announce that Brother Mike Murphy, was elected as the Knight of the Month for the month of August 2011..

Mike Murphy is one of our newer, most active members. He joined our council just over 3 months ago, but that does not diminish his contributions to our council. This Knight helped bar-tend the shrimp feed, crab feed and Oktoberfest, ALL before he became a Knight. He’s attended most every meeting and he’s been very active at our Councils functions. You may have seen him volunteer at St. Mary’s zippy bun booth or at the St. Stephens family feast. We’ve also enjoyed a couple of dinners that he and a few other knights made for us. He has also signed up to help at our next event, the chili 4 life cook off on October 1st. To my recollection, he’s never turned us down when we asked him to help. He holds a bright future with this council and it’s with great pride that is month’s “Knight of the Month” is Mike Murphy.

Members of the Knights of Columbus Council 953 wishing Brother Mike Murphy, MANY-MANY HAPPY YEARS!
